When a couple chose a hillside perch above the Sonoma Valley as their retirement home, they had one clear request: technology that served the space without overwhelming it. They wanted clean lines, easy controls, and a home that felt like a retreat, not a showroom. So they called us.
What followed was one of our favorite projects to date. It’s a strong example of what the best custom smart home designers in Sonoma County actually do: listen first, design around real life, and deliver a system that just works.
Key Takeaways
- Sync Systems designed a fully custom AV and networking system for a Sonoma Valley estate, working around real-world constraints including limited internet service and wildfire delays
- The project prioritized aesthetically clean, easy-to-use technology, independently controlled systems instead of an over-engineered whole-home platform
- Standout installations included resort-style outdoor audio, a custom media room with in-ceiling cinema speakers, and a distributed multi-zone audio system throughout the home
- Ongoing Peace of Mind support keeps the system running reliably long after installation day
The Client and the Challenge
The homeowners were new to Sonoma County and settling into their dream retirement property, a stunning hilltop home overlooking the vineyards of the Sonoma Valley. They had a clear vision for how technology should fit into their life:
- Present but not prominent
- Intuitive enough for everyday use without a learning curve
- Designed to complement the natural beauty around them, not compete with it
“The concept of keeping things simple — clean lines, aesthetically pleasing and easy to use — was the overall goal for them,” said Mike Camotta, owner and operator of Sync Systems.
Two significant challenges came up before a single wire was pulled.
The internet situation
Standard ISP options like Comcast or AT&T weren’t accessible at the property. The team had to work with microwave internet, which uses radio signals instead of cables to connect to a provider. Microwave internet requires a clear line of sight and can be more susceptible to interference than a wired connection, but as Camotta noted, it turned out to be a practical fit for what the clients actually needed.
It limited the temptation to go overboard with tech and helped the team focus on what mattered most: a clean, reliable system built around the clients’ real usage patterns.
The wildfires
Between 2017 and 2019, wildfires tore through the region, including directly through this property’s backyard. The project was delayed for more than two months while firefighters, along with general contractor MastersTouch Construction, worked to protect the home. The house survived. The project resumed. And the final result was worth the wait.
The System Design: What We Built and Why
Robert Manley, chief technology officer at Sync Systems, led the technical design. The team made a deliberate decision to use independently controlled systems rather than a unified whole-home platform. Given the bandwidth constraints and the clients’ preferences, this gave them excellent functionality without unnecessary complexity.
Control4 for the media rooms
For universal remotes across the home’s media spaces, we chose Control4. The platform offers strong programming flexibility, which mattered here because the homeowners were still getting a feel for how they’d actually use the space.
“A lot of people can only speculate that ‘this is what I’m gonna use now,'” said Camotta, “and then they get in there and live there and things change.” Control4 made it easy to adjust programming over time as the clients settled into their routines.
Lutron for lighting
Lutron handled lighting control throughout the home. It integrated cleanly with the rest of the system, giving the homeowners scene-based control that matched how they actually moved through the space day to day.
Sonos for distributed audio
Sonos components managed audio across multiple zones: the kitchen, master bedroom, master bathroom, and the full landscape. The multi-zone setup meant music could follow the homeowners through the house naturally, with each zone independently controlled.
The Standout Installations
Resort-style outdoor audio
The backyard was a priority. The homeowners spend meaningful time there, and the space deserved audio that felt as good as the view.
Manley described the approach: “Overlapping fields of audio allow for music to be evenly distributed as background music. By creating a resort-style audio layout, we can focus the audio on specific areas of entertainment evenly.”
The system used 8 satellite speakers and 2 in-ground subwoofers. The result is consistent, well-distributed sound across the outdoor entertaining area, the kind of audio that disappears into the experience rather than calling attention to itself. All components are rated for Northern California’s climate, handling rain, heat, fog, and wind.
The media room
The den was designed for occasional movie nights with family and friends. Sync Systems fitted it with a Sony TV and Triad in-ceiling cinema speakers for a genuine surround sound experience.
The speaker installation required some precision: framing was adjusted to accommodate the depth of the speakers so they’d sit flush and clean, because aesthetics weren’t optional on this project.
The subwoofer solution was custom-built. The team routed a vent into the toe kick of an adjacent cabinet and positioned the woofer facing downward inside it. Air flows freely through the vent, which prevents the rattle and acoustic issues that commonly occur when subs are boxed into enclosed spaces. It’s the kind of detail that most people will never see but will always hear.
The great room
The great room, where the clients entertain guests most often, used Sonos to improve the TV’s audio output. Sync Systems also incorporated a custom Leon speaker grill and mount positioned above the sound bar beneath the TV. It improved the room’s acoustics and its look, at a minimal cost.
Why the Technology Choices Mattered
Every decision on this project came back to the same question: does this serve the way these clients actually live?
That’s what separates good AV integration from great custom smart home design. The best custom smart home designers in Sonoma County don’t sell systems, they design solutions around real people and real properties.
A few specifics that made a difference here:
- Control4’s flexibility meant the clients weren’t locked into a rigid setup on day one. The system grew with them.
- Independent zone control via Sonos meant different household members could have different audio experiences in different rooms simultaneously.
- Custom millwork collaboration on the subwoofer and speaker grill meant the tech disappeared into the design instead of competing with it.
- Working within the internet constraints rather than fighting them produced a cleaner, more reliable result than trying to force a heavy whole-home platform onto limited bandwidth.
What Comes After Installation: Peace of Mind Support
A well-designed system needs ongoing care to keep performing well. That’s where our Peace of Mind support program comes in.
After a project like this one wraps, the homeowners aren’t left to manage their technology alone. Through our support partnership with Parasol, clients have access to:
- 24/7 phone, text, email, and chat support — live, knowledgeable help available around the clock
- Remote diagnostics and repair — many issues get resolved without a service call
- Proactive monitoring (Enhanced tier) — we can often catch and fix problems before the client notices them
- Priority scheduling — Peace of Mind clients move to the front of the line when in-person service is needed
- App-based control — clients can troubleshoot many common issues themselves from their phone
For a high-end estate like this one, that kind of ongoing support isn’t optional, it’s part of what makes the investment worthwhile. Technology that sits without professional oversight degrades. Systems drift. Updates need managing. Having a team available 24/7 means the system keeps working the way it did on day one.
The Peace of Mind program covers: home automation, whole-home Wi-Fi and networking, security and surveillance, AV systems, outdoor entertainment, lighting control, smart locks and access control, and connected app control.
The Result
“It’s just a phenomenal home when you go and actually walk in the front door and see everything that’s there and how seamless it looks,” said Manley. “It all works together and just flows.”
That’s the goal on every project. Technology that disappears into the space. Controls that make sense on day one. A home that feels exactly the way the owners imagined, and keeps performing long after we leave.
The Sonoma Valley estate is now exactly what the homeowners wanted: a place to enjoy retirement, entertain family, and take in one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world, with technology that stays out of the way and works every time they need it.
